This probably needs more testing, especially on the Samba side of things before this is accepted as fix. I can't speak on the Samba side myself, as I have no reason to join my *nix machines to our AD, so I don't, but if Samba emulates the lookups that Windows clients perform, this will still break things badly.
Client does DNS lookup for domain.local to return _svr records to tell the workstation where they can find LDAP/Global Catalog (login) servers. I have no idea if this affects *nix Samba clients in the same way.
