I have the same issue.
Using Ubuntu Studio 8.04, pulseaudio.
32bit athlon(barton)@2.2Ghz(3200+), 1GB ram, nforce2

Only WAV files stutter and only in Audicious.

Totem(Gstream), mhWaveEdit play without stutter!
