Similar issue. My "workaround" is when the system starts, hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to hit the TTY1 ... (see login prompt), then hit CTRL+ALT+F7, and suddenly X is all running and happy ... not sure why its not auto-loading anymore since upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04...
