I'm lost without asoundconf.
I don't use pulseaudio at all and I must set the default alsa soundcard to an expresscard.
I use speech recognition software running on wine.... both of these need to know the default sound card, and neither works optimally with pulseaudio.
I also use UbuntuStudio with the real-time kernel.
Very hard for this configuration, where what's wanted is only one sort of sound (and that's only incoming), but wants the lowest latency and simplest configuration possible.
