One way to address some of the poor appearance issues of the IDE on
ubuntu is to tell java to use it's own "metal" theme rather than
trying to use GTK.

My particular irritation was the lack of borders around open menus
meaning they tend to blend into the background making them hard to
read.

In the "arduino" script that launches the ide make the following
change at the end:

#java -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel
processing.app.Base
java -Dswing.defaultlaf=javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel
processing.app.Base

BTW, what is the recommended or generally-used look and feel for Java applications on Ubuntu? Should we be explicitly specifying one at all?

Hello all,
This appears to be a bug in Ubuntu's JRE. It appears that it is getting "menu" and "menu bar" mixed up.

This is affecting numerous java apps in Ubuntu (see bug #932274, which this is a duplicate of). Also see http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7169111 where it was reported.

The Arduino developer's list is discussing how to handle this, either a workaround by switching to another theme or seeing if it is fixed in future light-themes or OpenJDK packages.
