One way to address some of the poor appearance issues of the IDE on
ubuntu is to tell java to use it's own "metal" theme rather than
trying to use GTK.

My particular irritation was the lack of borders around open menus
meaning they tend to blend into the background making them hard to
read.

In the "arduino" script that launches the ide make the following
change at the end:

#java -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel
processing.app.Base
java -Dswing.defaultlaf=javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel
processing.app.Base
