I think we can keep this bug report closed. The issue of apt-xapian-index paralyzing the machine has been solved. Many issues were identified here and solved by aexl and others. So please file new bug reports for further issues.
For apt-xapian-index taking 100-200 MB and keep running at full CPU for several minutes on our machines I think there are two issues: 1) It is not engineered in a resource-friendly fashion. I think it uses way to much for what it achieves. This is an upstream issue. 2) It is totally overkill and does not belong by default on the Ubuntu desktop. In my ignorance I don't know of any feature that it brings (except maybe collecting "popcon" statistics). But I should take this elsewhere than in this closed bug report.
