@Barry you have to flash with an adb enabled recovery image otherwise the system cannot enter into recovery to apply the image.
The adb enabled recovery image is there http://people.canonical.com/~jhm/barajas/recovery.img
and the command to flahs from fastboot is ubuntu-device-flash touch --bootstrap --channel ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed/krillin.en --recovery-image recovery.img
Alternatively you can flash a mako which doesn't require a specific recovery image.
