Bug Description

Binary package hint: lib32asound2-plugins

In 9.04 64 bit, installing the lib32asound2-plugins package through Synaptic results in the deletion of Skype and any Wine-dependant apps, such as Picasa. Conversely, If lib32asound2-plugins are installed, then installing Skype will delete them.

This should be fixed, because it is a longstanding bug, and because of this I can only use Skype with pasuspender, which sucks. I read somewhere that in Karmic this is fixed already, maybe we can have a backport?

As of this morning, this is broken in Karmic.

Skype depends on ia32-libs
ia32-libs depends on lib32asound2-plugins
lib32asound2-plugins conflicts with ia32-libs

That seems like a bad loop to me.

You should not have lib32asound-plugins installed. Luke reverted the changes
to ia32-libs, so now 32-bit libasound2-plugins are shipped in ia32-libs.

I had the same problem.
Solved it by installing alsa 1.0.21 from this repo:

That archive has nothing to do with this bug, however.
