No sound at all on 12.04 install

Bug Description

I am getting no audio at all on a new install of 12.04 beta.

alsamixer reports error
cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument

New install of 11.10 on the same hardware works fine.

Found a workaround from an old bug 669092:

in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, add

options snd-hda-intel model=generic

This restores very basic sound functionality, but it is not a complete fix.

And from bug 910141, the full workaround is to put

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Which seems to provide full functionality.
