No sound at all following installation of Kubuntu 11.10

Bug Description

Sound was OK on this machine running Kubuntu 11.04. Fresh install of 11.10 has killed it. No response at all in Pulse Audio volume control

Try muting 'IEC958' using alsamixer in a Konsole.

Fixed.

Removed, re-installed Pulse Audio, which got the sound output working.

Sound recording using Gnome sound recorder still failed, but works OK with Audacity, so I'll settle for that.

Maybe when installing Sound recorder on a KDE system there is a missing Gnome dependency? My previous system was Ubuntu (Gnome) with KDE installed on top, so I guess there were a lot of Gnome libraries there I don't have with this pure Kubuntu system.

This release of Ubuntu is no longer receiving maintenance updates. If this is still an issue on a maintained version of Ubuntu please let us know.
