bug confirmed in 16.04LTS

and it does not seem to be a matter of muted volume.

tried various suggested workarounds with no good result (see below), might be an issue with linux not allowing to choose analog VS digital output on the internal wiring (both speakers and jack)... even when I select "full duplex analog stereo" output.

seemingly no effect:
- booting kernel with option "pci=use_crs" per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/136469
- booting kernel with option "acpi=off" per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/136469
- adding alsa option to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-micsense" per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/218817

not applicable:
- updating the BIOS (suggested per https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2193881&page=2) is not an option as I have no windows OS on this machine

to be more accurate: booting kernel with option "acpi=off" per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/136469

DOES work (enabling sound playback), but is not acceptable as the hardware is a laptop; thus needs acpi.
