Ok, thanks for the comments. If you're up for more time-consuming tasks, you could try bisecting - first thing to try if so would be to start off with Maverick, verify that it works fine, then install this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules, reboot, and see if the problem has reappeared?
