Ok Trevor, looks like your hardware is indeed quite similar to the one in #671814. Please try the following:
1) Make sure no alsa driver overrides (such as https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules are installed). Also remove model quirks in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. 2) Download and install http://people.canonical.com/~diwic/temp/alsa-hda-diwic-idt88b-dkms_1.0.23.diwic_all.deb 3) Reboot 4) Test and see if it solves your problem correctly. 5) Please post an alsa-info according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo
