Funny thing, my Windows partition had no prob with the card, but I
reinstalled xp pro for the heck of it and xp pro didn't find the sound card
either. As a last ditch effort I moved the card to a new slot in my tower
and it worked. I haven't booted into ubuntu yet since because I haven't
redone grub. But maybe try switching slots. For 10 min of work its worth a
shot.

I have a very similar problem. Sound was OK, then an update and suddenly
no sound card found. I have re-installed the kernel image, purged alsa
etc. but still no joy. If you need any info about my system, please let
me know.
