Bug Description

In terminal, I ran: ubuntu-bug audio
It's a fresh Lucid install on an HP G62 laptop. Earphones work fine, speakers not at all. Windows 7 plays sound on the earphones, unplug them and it switches to speakers. Ubuntu only plays on earphones.

I can't believe this is unique, but Google hasn't helped me at all.

Could you please update your alsa drivers, as explained here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

Please report back as to whether this fixes your issue.

 affects ubuntu/alsa-driver

Changed in alsa-driver (Ubuntu):

Thanks for the quick response!

That changed things. Now I get sound from the built-in speakers on this laptop, but never from the earphones. If I change the port in Volume Control (see attached) to "analog headphones" my computer is silent whether earphones are plugged in or not. Put it back to "analog output" and the speakers are active, whether the earphones are plugged in or not.

If I can only have one, I'd rather have the earphones...

Hmm. It looks like both Master and Speaker volumes are connected to the same NID, which is but this shouldn't affect headphones which runs through the other NID. Could you try to
1) set it to "analog output"
2) run the following terminal command: "alsamixer -D hw:SB"
3) Make sure both headphones, master and speaker are turned up.

Does this improve the situation?

If it does not help, could you please try the following terminal commands and see if that helps:

  # echo 0x1d 0x411111f0 > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/user_pin_configs
  # echo 1 > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig

Thanks!

In Alsamixer, the headphone volume was at 0 and it refused to budge. I could change other volumes OK.

I had the headphone and external mic plugged in when I booted. I also tried not having them plugged in when I booted, but plugging them in on the fly. It appears that Ubuntu does not detect the plugging-in. (Windows 7 does, so it's not a hardware problem.)

The echo commands said "bash: ....reconfig: Permission denied" even if I used sudo.

Thanks for your efforts!

Sorry for being unclear. Run these commands in this order:

sudo su
echo 0x1d 0x411111f0 > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/user_pin_configs
echo 1 > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig
exit

...the thing is that just doing "sudo echo 1 > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig" will be interpreted as "(sudo echo 1) > /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig", so the pipe is actually not run in root context. I remember it took a while for me to figure that out :-)

The second echo command gave this result:bash: echo: write error: Device or resource busy
There's no change in the audio behaviour.
Something I have just noticed: Ubuntu also does not appear to realize when the computer is plugged in. I specified "never put the display to sleep" in the "AC power" section of power management, but it puts the display to sleep as if I were running on batteries. These are both "sensors" issues, so perhaps they are related.

It works!
I changed alsa-base.conf to:options snd-hda-intel model=autoinstead of model=basic
That added an option in Sound Output, "Analog Speakers." When I selected it, sound comes from earphones if they are plugged in, otherwise from the built-in speakers.

Yes, model=auto made the good "analog speakers" choice appear.
I'm pretty sure I sent you a message about the user_pin stuff not working. Here's a copy:
