The second echo command gave this result:bash: echo: write error: Device or resource busy
There's no change in the audio behaviour.
Something I have just noticed: Ubuntu also does not appear to realize when the computer is plugged in. I specified "never put the display to sleep" in the "AC power" section of power management, but it puts the display to sleep as if I were running on batteries. These are both  "sensors" issues, so perhaps they are related.
