FWIW, I installed Lubuntu 23.10 on my old HP TouchSmart 600. Because of this audio problem, I've been using bluetooth speakers. Last week, I plugged in some old computer speakers via the 3.5mm audio out. For a short instance, sound actually came out of the internal speakers. Eventually, sound came out of the external speakers, and no longer the internal.

I think Lubuntu uses PulseAudio by default, but ALSA seems to also be installed. I don't know why the internal speakers suddenly worked then stopped, and I haven't figured out how to reproduce it. Either way, bt and audio out still works.
