Binary package hint: pulseaudio
In my system are 3 Audio interfaces VIA: VT1708, TerraTec Electronic GmbH: Aureon 5.1 MkII and Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate STX (only mic input)
It is not possible to play sound with the VIA: VT1708

What errors does pulse give you when you attempt to use the VT1708? Have you tried using linux-alsa- driver- modules- $(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu- audio-dev?
