I have a K50IJ as well.
Speakers work fine, but when I plug the headphones in, sounds gets muted, when I bring the volume back up, it plays on both the speakers and headphones.
Had the same problem no matter what distro I tried.
But
Here is what is interesting, I tried a live USB of Google Chrome OS, I do not have this problem at all!!!
I know nothing of programming, and am really a newbie at linux, but it would seem to me, that someone who does know about it, could simply review the settings on Chrome OS and replicate that onto Ubuntu, but I could be wrong, someone please let me know.
