I have the same problem. When I plug in the jack, speakers and headphones are both muted. I can unmute them again, but not separately. gnome-alsamixer reports

so there is no sense playing with the Independent HP control. In sound preferences, connector is either "Analog Output", and then LS and HP both play, or "Analog Headphones", in which case none plays. On K50IJ [HDA Intel] VT1708S, I have the latest kernel and alsa (both end in 23)
