It works now, thank you!!!

Installed Ubuntu 8.04 with the medibuntu repository 'alsa-firmware' and the ordinary ubuntu repository 'alsa-filmware-loaders' packages just as the doctor ordered (I also disabled the onboard intel-chip in bios).
