I've experienced the same bug on the same laptop.
My solution was to modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add the following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd enable=1 index=0
Reboot, and with any luck you'll be welcomed with the Ubuntu sounds! I have tried this on 8.10 -> 10.04 Beta 2 and it worked every time.
