This was/still is my problem every time a new release came. I had no better luck with other distros like openSuse, but that was sometime ago. I also have a P1 express dual and the following thing should work for you too.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Go to the end of the file and add this line:
options snd-hda-intel model=lg
Save the file.
Now with Karmic I had to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic:
