JK: sorry for the delay. It's difficult to say without traces for your live cd and rotary (presuming it's a rotary HD and not SSD) what order the resources are grabbed. I can't rule out firmware errors, hardware errors, or linux errors. The best thing to do at this stage is to test a mainline build as Brad suggested.
