I may have a fix... it appears this laptop needs this in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

# Power down HDA controllers after 10 idle seconds
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 probe_mask=8 enable_msi=1 model=auto

lets see how it goes!
