Maybe even more than that. Sometimes it seems that you actually have to be either an alsa, kernel and bios developer to really understand what's going wrong with your sound. Actually, I have a pretty good understanding of linux imho (I'm a full-time developer with some experience on writing device drivers, though rarely doing kernel hacking), but I must admit that I don't know much about sound drivers and obviously wasn't able to fix the sound myself. And that's exactly the problem, because this is even harder for the famous "average joe"...
