I had similar problem for a while on Ubuntu 9.04 beta on HP nx6110 notebook.
The sound disappeared after installing a few audio players using MPD 0.14.

Sound works again after removing MPD and some of the installed audio players (Sonata 1.6.1 for example).

Please have a look at the Sound Preferences settings and restart your system.

"Following this bug report https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=2873, I found the DAC Volume which was muted. It's the last one in alsamixer.
So i have now sound on T21 with 9.04. But why was this muted during update process?"

See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/362277?comments=all

Please, check if DAC Volume in alsamixer is muted and report here.
Maybe we can fix that bug before the final release.

I think it isn't in the alsamixer GUI. Open terminal and type alsamixer. With right arrow move to end and there it was for me. Unmute with 'm' and lower volume with arrow up.

I have seen this issue on a Sony Vaio VGN-TT2 after a 8.10 to 9.04 upgrade.

"alsamixer" at the command line, and unmuting the various muted lines resolved the issue.

Many thanks!

Hello shivam,

I don't think there is a complete solution for this. However, i found some way that can make you feel better with that. try this.

The solution is quite simply.
First:
Code:

" gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base "

Then add the following to the end of the file:
Code:

" options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 "

Run the first line in terminal, Without the quotation marks. (Applications/Accessories/Terminal to open the file alsa-base.
Then add the second line to the bottom of the file. save the changes and reboot.

You have to take note, that your laptop speaker will never work. Use HEADPHONE to listen to the sound. It worked for me. Can listen to all sound perfectly, only with the headphone, not with laptop speaker. Finally, all the best!

Here is the solution for the bugs above, I tried it on mine, Ubuntu 9.04 it works.

   1. Type the following command into the Terminal. (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal)
      gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
   2. Add these lines to the end of the file:
      # Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard
      options snd-pcsp index=-2
      alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
      alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
      options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
      options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
   3. Navigate to System -> Preferences -> Sound and change everything to ALSA
      Ubuntu Sound Preferences
   4. Go back to your Terminal and type in this
      vim /etc/group
   5. Replace the following line: (or something very similar to it)
      audio:x:29:pulse
      with this
      audio:x:29:<your Ubuntu login name>,pulse
   6. Reboot and test your sound. :)
