This affects me too.

I'm using 14.04.3 and the spdif crackles. My kernel is 3.16.0-53-generic #72~14.04.1-Ubuntu.

I'm using a Asrock Z97 Extreme6 and a new cable. All other audio output is fine but while getting a bit stream from USB the audio is rather muted but usable.
