Hi guys,

Have you tried to adjust the volume slider marked as IEC958 or IEC958 Capture (they are the same...). This can be done from volume control application, just remember to choose alsa mixer. This worked for me, and I have Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard (which in my knowledge uses ADI AD1988 chip).

I get sound through coaxial and optical. Oh, and I'm using latest hardy (2.6.24-21-generic).
