aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav results in nothing from the speakers. I verified the wav files is present in this path. Running as root nets no sound.

The only other user on this computer has no sound either.

The OS is 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS patched current.
