Bug Description

Sample rates higher than 48kHz produce no sound in my setup both in pure alsa mode and pulseaudio (with default-sample-rate: 192000 or 96000 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf) modes. Following strings shows that audio hardware is set to this mode with no alsa resampling or something similar.

aplay -D plughw:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 high_def_audio.wav

cat /proc/asound/NVidia/pcm0p/sub0$/hw_params
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S32_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 192000 (192000/1)
period_size: 4096
buffer_size: 8192

P.S. Sorry for using non stock kernel this is due to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/v86d/+bug/1080530 (build from #22 with single patch applied) but problem can be reprodused in "pure" setup.

Did home tests which might help: Fedora 18 (beta) with 3.6 kernel (alsa ver. 1.0.25) works OK with 96kHz rate but not with 192kHz (noise mixed with sound). Installation of alsa 1.0.25 from sources with Ubuntu kernel works both with 96kHz and 192kHz but with metallic distortion.

Further investigations: 3.5.0 kernels from Quantal are affected by similar problem. They produce sound but with the same metallic tinkling both on 96kHz and 192kHz freqs. Fedora's 3.6 have fixed 96kHz playback but not 192kHz.
