Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

After installing flash the file preview when uploading files is missing. Let's say you want to upload some photos on your blog and you want to select some of them using the preview. I have tried this on Lucid 32 and 64 versions (all kernels since the release date) and the result is the same. I used Firefox 2.6.8 and Adobe Flash Player plug-in version 10.1.53.64ubuntu0.10.04.3. See the screen-shots.

See bug #89381 for similar issues, however I think that this is a Nautilus problem and not Firefox.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

@Pedro, I am reopening this as a bug, something is wrong when having Flash can intercepta standard OS file dialog.

I can confirm this same problem in Maverick using the latest Adobe Flash for 64-bit.

This seems to be website-specific. Try to upload an image to Flickr with Flash enabled - no preview. Try to upload an image to your Launchpad profile with Flash enabled - preview is OK. It looks like websites can override the OS upload dialog with their own or something along those lines.

This has been added to the Ubuntu release notes:
"When uploading a file to a website, the file browse window doesn't show a preview when an image is selected. This only happens on some websites, when Flash is installed. It appears such websites replace the Nautilus "Browse" dialog with a Flash version (Bug:613886)"

Changed in ubuntu-release-notes:
status: New → Fix Released

This has nothing to do with Nautilus, which is not involved at all with displaying the file picker (which is provided by GTK).

The flash plugin is responsible for presenting the file-picker in these cases where it doesn't work, but it doesn't provide a preview widget like Firefox does. That's a flash problem though, and should be forwarded to Adobe

This still wasn't fixed by Adobe, after a year.
As this issue is a major lack in flow and user experience, and it affects any program that uses file browser,
I would suggest adding an options pane that allows enabling the preview pane, and changing the view (icon/list).
This is a major user-experience bug, because of facebook - whenever I upload an image I need to memorize the picture numbers.

i have seen this in a 12.04 , not mine. in odnoklassniki.ru . flash is installed. there is multiple file upload dialog, for photos - it does not show preview. if you press cancel there, another page is shown , where there are near 5 upload fields, each opens one file selection dialog, and it has preview. all packages should be updated (at that computer), but i am not sure.
