So the information provided by SMART is not reliable as we've seen some abnormal values. How can we be certain that this drives failures are because of high "Load Cycles" values?

For users of Windows you can use the "Power Booster" utility from Hitachi's site. With this you can disable power saving functions from inside Windows.
