May I suggest that anyone who still has issues and comments on this
bug should include this information:

Laptop make and model
BIOS version
Hard disk make, model, and firmware revision (available from smartctl)

Perhaps we can discover a pattern of manufacturers or models which
handle certain settings in different ways.
