I can confirm this too, the problem is not related to linux exclusively. we've
got some vostro 1500 one of them with vista and the rest with ubuntu. all of
them are affected by this bug.

According with our research the problem lies mostly on the Disk Drive
firmware's If you check the wiki page about this bug you'll find some hdd
firmware upgrades for lenovo laptops that addresses the problem.

Also if you ask Dell for warranty replacement they'll give it to you
