if you have official support from dell then demand they would find a solution.
dell have Linux engineer who are suppose to certify Ubuntu on the hardware it runs.
there is also a mailing list for dell Linux.

someone here mentioned early that he had Linux support from dell and they replaced hes hard drive.

tell us how it went.

(btw canonical is not suppose to do everything we want it to do. this is a open source project and the real "heavy lifting" should come from the community)
