Unfortunately, this functionality has only a half-baked implementation in lightdm, it restores only parts of the session information from .dmrc:

So, until all of these bugs are fixed, lightdm isn't a viable alternative either. What we did was actually using a fork of gdm 2.20 and deployed it on our Debian Wheezy machines which uses gdm3 by default. This way, we also get the themes functionality back and the display manager works as expected.
