Well, we have around 50 machines in the students' computer pool at our physics department which means in the worst case students will have manually restore their choice 50 times. There are even more machines in larger departments at this university, so this number can be even higher.

Don't you agree that this is quite annoying, especially when the original design of the display manager perfectly solved this by storing this information in the user's home directory?

It's a user-specific setting, what exactly is the reasoning to store it outside the home directory in a local path?
