I was advised to open a new bug, even though bug number 1246111 describes the behaviour I am seeing.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu

Produce a document in Abiword

Produce a document in Abiword
Save As a .abw file
Abiword crashes and produces a crash report file at /var/crash/_usr_bin_abiword.1000.crash

I shall attempt to upload the .crash file as an attachment
