I also experience this bug. My mother card is Intel D915GAV and my video card is Sapphire X700 PRO 256MB. The 32 bit version of ubuntu boots fine, and the 64 bit version boots fine when I change "splash" option to "nosplash" in grub menu.lst. Though it is annoying that after some of the ubuntu updates, the "nosplash" option reverts back to "splash".
