A question for you three (Timo, Habbit, and stuartmarsden): Do you have framebuffer enabled with VGA extended resolution (thanks Habbit for remembering)?
Look at your Grub configuration (/boot/grub/menu.lst; see if there is a 'VGA=' in the definitions; the 'defoptions line is a good candidate, but please report the other places as well. For the record, this is what mine says:
# defoptions=splash pci=assign-busses vga=792, and on each bootable kernel:

So I am using 1024x768 resolution for the console.
