Just some thoughts: both Timo and I have a R480-based video card. How does usplash do all the rendering? Directly with its own VGA driver or through the kernel framebuffer? If it's through the kernel FB, how can I activate the it without running usplash? - to check which of them is defective. And last, wouldn't it be possible to force the kernel FB driver (if it indeed is the failing component, as I suspect) to use the most-compatible-and-basic VGA driver? How?
