The latest version of the patch has now been committed upstream as http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=19110595c89b2d606883b7cb99260c7e47fd2143
Unfortunately, it did not reach the 3.0 kernel, but given the number of people affected, I suggest we merge/backport this into Oneiric.
