Dell Precision M4500 trackpad is detected as a PS/2 Generic Mouse

Bug Description

My Dell Precision M4500 trackpad is detected as a mouse instead of a trackpad, this means that the Gnome System->Preferences->Mouse application does not show the Trackpad settings.
This means I cannot disable the touchpad tap-to-click functionality off and because it is very sensitive, typing without the cursor jumping around is a problem.

I have tried upgrading to Maverick-Proposed to see if the bug fix for this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380126 would fix it, but it didn't.

Applying the fix in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/754344 allows the touchpad on the Precision M4500 to be recognized as a Trackpad, but I cannot disable the Tap to Click feature.

This also affects clausoft MNW737 "meenee" netbook. In that case, "tpconfig" appears to detect Synaptics touchpad, but when it tries to adjust the zthreshold it fails to do so. It also fails to unset tap-to-click.

I noted in the duplicate bug 728558 that there's a similar bug 754344 where the fix is a patch to psmouse.ko to detect a new variant of touchpad hardware.

There's a workaround tool at http://sourceforge.net/projects/touchdaemon/develop which detects keyboard activity and disables/re-enables the touchpad accordingly. There's a patch posted there which is a good improvement, to use X calls instead of shelling out subcommands. Without the patch I had to fixup some string handling errors, and the invocation is messy, like this:
./touchdaemon -d -m 100 -c 'xinput set-int-prop "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse" "Device Enabled" 8'
instead of
./touchdaemon -d

(I ran the tool with a 100ms polling interval because the 200ms interval seemed to let the touchpad back in from time to time.)

To build the tool I needed
sudo apt-get install libx11-dev xserver-xorg-dev

I found the tool by seeing it mentioned here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=733079

That tool won't help with tap to click or tap and drag being annoying but it does help with accidental mouse actions while typing.

I've bundled the sources and a built binary here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3285944/touchpad-fixup-tool.tgz

Hi,

I applied the patch from

     https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/118834/

manually for the kernel 2.6.39.3

     Linux mew 2.6.39.3-candela #1 SMP Thu Jul 14 17:53:16 CEST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and attached the working psmouse.ko with tapping and vertical scrolling.

If anyone can tell me which option in the patch is responsible for disabling the tapping function please let me know, maybe I want to disable that too.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

I have noticed that this is a common issues since Ubuntu 10.10 - I have gathered a list of bugs with the same symptoms:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/769129

Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Jim Baxter, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. his bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
