The squashfs errors would indicate either a kernel bug in squashfs, or bad CD media (read errors), or a bad CD-ROM drive. The image boots fine here, but I'll also try to write it to a real CD.

I tested the current amd64 desktop burned on a CD-RW, on an USB stick, and in kvm. In all three cases it worked flawlessly. The squashfs errors indicate that there is some trouble reading the CD, and thus all sorts of things break. For now I'm willing to blame bad hardware or CD media, but can you please attach /var/log/kern.log after a complete boot? Thanks!

I got these errors too the first time I booted my LiveUSB. I think a reboot was enough to fix it, either that or I had to re-copy the iso to the usb stick. I would try both of those and see if you can reproduce the errors reliably.

This sounds like incredible.
Now the same disk of yesterday works on both the machine, i'm posting from maverick installed from this CD.
But sometime when I lauch installation i've got much similar errors to this reported.
Now i have to test Xubuntu. tomorrow i 'll try untill reproduce the bug.
Probably is a bad quality of the CD, sometime readable, sometime not.
I attach the kernel log of the working installed maverick.
