No sound with nVidia High Definition Audio card

I get no sound whatsoever on a Gateway MX3414 laptop running Dapper AMD64. I've tried a few things, like compiling the dev version of ALSA, but with no luck. All applications behave as if sound is working normally (no errors when playing oggs in totem, etc.) EXCEPT vumeter, which never shows any change in volume - it always shows no sound.

i have the same problem with the same laptop but with feisty fawn 7.04 and i have the outputs and will attach them
