I got it all working! Thanks to plun in the swedish Ubuntu forum.

1. Download the latest alsa package from here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/alsa/snapshot/driver

2. Extract it where ever you like and use cd in a terminal to get there.

3. Do: ./configure --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes --with-cards=hda-intel ; make

4. sudo make install

5. Restart you're system and it is done!

Good luck! ;)

The ./configure --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes --with-cards=hda-intel and the make command should not be done in one line. To the .confogure first, jit enter, ant then do make and after that sudo make install.

the maddening thing about this is that when i play an mp3 in Beep or Totem, the oscilloscopes show that *something* is playing - but i can hear anything.

I also have no sound on an ASROCK motherboard K8NF6G-VSTA (with AMD Sempron 2800) with Feisty. Amarok is pretending to be playing happily, but no sound comes out. I also did a trial with Gutsy tribe 5 from Live CD, but it gave no better result. My original bug report had been closed although there had never been a solution.

Sound was working on some earlier kernels (I believe e.g. with 2.6.10 or nearby), which, however, had problems that sound was lost after suspend and/or hibernate.

I have found a workaround which solves some of those problems (although I have no clue why it does; I simply took hints from some of the many sound related bug reports)

Status now:
- Sound working reliably (loudspeaker, headphone, mic front and mic back)
- Hibernate : working well. Sound even continues to play where it was at point of hibernate. (But strange things on screen while resuming from hibernate).
- Suspend: sound comes back ok as with hibernate, but screen remains black. Screen's LEDs indicate that there is not even a video signal. And even blind login does not give screen back.

Here are the findings of the system:
Sound module: snd-hda-intel
lspci -vvv reports the very same audio device as in this bug report - "nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)"- , with subsystem "ASRock Incorporation Unknown device 03f2".
aplay --list-devices reports: "card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC861VD Analog [ALC861VD Analog]"

Either one of these lines need to be inserted into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
(they all seem to work indentically; no discernable difference to me)
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack probe_mask=1
options snd-hda-intel model=clevo
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

This line gave NO sound, but hibernate and suspend worked as with the above lines:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

I tested with Gutsy live cd and I got the same result, no sound.

aggieml (michael-linder) wrote : fixed! for Nvidia MCP51 hda with Sigmatel STAC 9200 chip

I finally got my sound working after a month of searching various posts!

I have the NVidia MCP51 High Definition Audio with the Sigmatel STAC 9200 chip on it. It came with my Gateway MT3421 laptop.

I had given up on sound because everyone on forums had given up, but there's a patch for fixing this sound card on the alsa-bugs site!

Just go here and look for the post with the patch and follow the instructions:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=868053

A couple things:
1...you don't have to remove all alsa packages like he said in step 1. All I did was remove alsa-lib and alsa-utils.
2...the patch file is at the bottom of the post as an attachment.

I hope this works for some of you!

Mike

I also am having issues with "nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)" sound card. It is in a HP Pavilion dv9428nr laptop that I purchased back in August. The sound worked OK with Feisty although I had lots of problems with Audacity recognizing the sound configurations. However, it doesn't work at all in Gutsy. I get a system beep instead of a login sound, for example, and the sound icon in the tray shows up as muted. Trying to adjust the volume gives:

"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured."

Also, aplay -l gives: "aplay: device_list:204: no soundcards found..." (without the quotes). lspci -v gives the card model that I described above. I don't understand why it doesn't work since it did in Feisty. I sure do hope it gets fixed soon....

I tried the patch and the steps mentioned on the fedora forum... very bad results on Gutsy. First, removing alsa stuff remove gdm and a few other things. Then, after installing everything and rebooting, the soundcard is not even detected. alsaconf detect the card but can't configure it. Please! don't tell me I'll have to use Vista on this laptop for another 6 month after Gutsy's release...

Got my sound working on a new Gateway ML3108b laptop using a patched ALSA 1.0.15-rc3 (as described on the Fedora link above). You also need to APT the gettext package as the alsa-utils won't make without it. Transferring a copy of my OGG library as I type.

Thanks to all involved - almost fell off my seat in surprise when the laptop did the little drum roll at the login prompt!!!

Also make sure, that you use "asoundconf set-default-card NVidia" and not "asoundconf set-default-card nvidia" or something similar, it won't work this way.

hello all,
just to share my personnal experience on similar problem: after gustsy update no sound available with "nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)". the solution was to boot on generic kernel (like feisty when sound was ok) and not 2.6.22.14-i386 kernel as proposed by gutsy. so i reboot my laptop with the generic kernel and sound is ok now.

I hope this will be a useful some of you.

so i installed linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-386 and sound is back with default gutsy kernel 2.6.22-14-i386!!

This will be retargeted towards the Hardy kernel once it is released. I've tagged this as "hardy-kernel-candidate" so that we make sure to retarget this report once the new release is out. However against the linux-source-2.6.22 package this is being marked as "Won't Fix" as it does not meet the criteria for a stable release update. To learn more about the stable release update process please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks!

I was having sound problems (no sound at all) and I was able to get everything working after following Holmen recipe.
Downloaded the referred file, compiled it, installed and everything started working after a restart. I just had to tweek the sound system a little bit to get good sound quality.

Thanks Holmen and everybody in the forum, that was very useful.

Cheers!

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 .
