screen goes blank when booting to live environment with some nouveau Graphics Cards

Bug Description

When I boot up from the ubuntu 10.04 alpha 3 live cd the screen goes blank after clicking "try ubuntu without installing". This also happens when I try to boot after installing. I believe this has something to do with the switch to nouveau as the default video driver for nvidia chips because I have the same problem when trying to boot Fedora, which uses nouveau by default as well. Booting 9.10 and earlier causes no problems except I have to adjust the screen resolution each time I boot up. I have a nvidia Geforce 6200 video card and am using a 2003 HP desktop attached to a 42'' LCD monitor (TV really).

Are you talking about how it takes so long to get into the live environment?

I just ran a test on my System and it did take quite a while but it did come up.

No, my screen displayed "no signal" after clicking "try ubuntu without
installing" in the lucid lynx alpha 3 live cd. It stayed that way for
5 minutes, so I doubt it's just a matter of waiting it out. Also, I'm
still not sure where to get the log file in my working/installed
version of ubuntu for the livecd crash. - Adam

If you were able to successfully get lucid installed the log file locations are located in the following link. I verified they are still present post-install.

I just noticed you states that you did a switch to nouveau. I don't have to do that on ubuntu. Did you try doing it without the switch.

I am not able to boot in to lucid, I can only boot in to my old karmic
installation, therefore I am not able to obtain a syslog file for the
failure to boot from the alpha 3 live cd.
I also didn't actively switch to noveau or anything, I was just under
the impression that nouveau became the default driver instead of nv
for nvidia video cards as of lucid alpha 3. I also believed that
nouveau might be the main problem because fedora uses nouveau by
default and the screen says "no signal" when booting fedora from a
live cd just like it does when I boot ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) alpha 3
from a live cd and because I never had this problem with previous
versions of ubuntu or distros that do not have nouveau installed by
default for nvidia video cards. - Adam

Hey Anzenketh,
No, I tried clicking the "install" option on the ubuntu 10.04 alpha 3

I have the same problem with lucid alpha 3.
When I pressed in "try ubuntu without installing" the screen go to "no signal". I think is a problem with the default graphic card output (I have DVI connected instead of VGA to my monitor). After some seconds I can hear the default Ubuntu system sound, but the screen Is still in "no signal"

The problem is that I don't have any VGA cable in this moment and I can't test VGA output.

Is there any alternative boot option to enable DVI output?

Thanks.

Marcos,
I have a vga connection and it displays "no signal", so that certainly
didn't solve the bug for me. Also, I never heard the ubuntu startup
sound, so my problem may be different than yours. - Adam

Renamed to casper as that is the package that controls the live CD booting. Ubiquity is the actual installer.

On A side note I am not sure if it is nouveau fault I have a few different models of nvidia cards so I thought I would do a few test cases to see if I can reproduce the issue.

(system 1) Works fine
$lspci |grep nVidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce Go 6600] (rev a2) Launched Successfully.

(system 2) Works fine.

This is my experience,

Tested with alpha 3 and daily build (2 Mar)

Test1:
VGA only : I can hear de Ubuntu sound at the end, but no signal on screen.

Test2:
DVI only : I can hear de Ubuntu sound at the end, but no signal on screen.

Test3:
DVI only and "nomodeset" option at start up. (I can see the blue lines of plymouth) and finally appears one buggy screen with "yellow" horizontal bands.

After Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and go back to Ctrl+Alt+F7 the desktop screen is ok but with wrong resolution. If I go to System > Preferences> Screen , it can't detect the right screen model and resolution.

$lspci |grep nVidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce 7600 GS] (rev a1)

ASAP i will do the Casper debugging.

Here are the Casper Debuging info.

I can't see desktop ant TTY's with this lucid Build day, then I have mounted the casper.rw into my working Karmic desktop with :

sudo mount -o loop casper-rw /media/casper/ and now I have extracted the following log files.

shows the purple ubuntu boot logo for 3 seconds and then my monitor

I have the same problem. I used lucid March 20 daily build. I have tried a number of the workarounds I have found on the net with no success. I have Dell 4600i mobo with 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller. I am using an older model Adtec LCD monitor that only goes 1024x768 @75hz. l lose the signal about 7 secs after I click run live cd. Is there a boot option that will force the monitor to run at 75hz? I didn't have this problem with 8.04. It started for me with 8.10.

Ubuntu does not work well on LCD TV's yet. It works great on LCD computer
monitors, but Ubuntu 9.10 and below can't recognize the correct resolution
on LCD TV's, so the image is shifted and must be reset every time one boots
up. Ubuntu 10.04 can't recognize LCD TV's at all because Noveau is used by
default in Ubuntu 10.04 instead of the nvidia driver. For some reason
Noveau is even worse at being able to recognize LCD TV's than the nvidia
driver at this stage. Until a Ubuntu developer tests it on a larger LCD TV
(42" or so) and figures out how to repair this problem one is forced to
either use an older version of Ubuntu or Opensuse. Sorry for the bad news,
but Ubuntu is well on it's way to being the best OS ever and the tech
support staff is usually great about fixing bugs like this. - Adam
