Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Neither the internal microphone nor a microphone plugged into the mic port record sound in lucid on a Dell Vostro 320. Both worked in karmic, so this is a regression.

Sound Preferences shows only "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" as an input source device. Nothing is displayed on the VU meter when the input volume is cranked all the way up (and of course unmuted) and no sound is recorded through either the internal or external microphones.

Audio output works correctly on both the internal speakers and the headset jack.

Also, since this is a regression is it possible to run apport-collect from Karmic, so the results can be compared to those from Lucid?

Hi there,

I might have bumped into a similar problem.
After a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04, the built in mic of my laptop doesn't seem to work.

I understand (post #10) that we do not have any checkbox for internal/external mic selection and autoswitching is done based on jack presence.
In my case an external microphone connected to the 1/8" jack input works but if I disconnect it, the internal mic doesn't work at all.

I installed Jaunty and Karmic and in both cases the microphones are muted by default. Using the alsamixer I managed to use the built-in microphone. The external microphone doesn't work in any version. The line out works fine except the fact that it doesn't mute the built-in speakers, so the sound goes both ways. This happens in Jaunty, Karmic and Lucid. I was able to record using the built-in microphone (Jaunty and Karmic), but the quality of the recording is very poor. In Lucid I wasn't able to use either microphone.

If this works you can add a file in /etc/modprobe.d/, containing:
options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad
so that your fix is permanent. For example:

Just tested with the latest maverick desktop amd64 image (20100928) and it's still kind of an issue: with a mic plugged in, I can hit the mic and headphones to get it to pick some sound, but it doesn't get voice at all -- I suspect the sound levels are too low and there is no way to change it (it's all mixed out).

Furthermore, jack sensing doesn't work for the speaker/headphones plug; I have something plugged in and the sound isn't redirected, it still comes out the integrated speakers.

There is a quirk in the driver for the original hardware: 1028:02f5
It has been in there since a long time ago, actually even since the support for that codec was first added.
I could try rewriting the model to the way I think it should be, because that model isn't used for any other hardware, but yet that doesn't explain how it could be working before...?

Okay, let's revisit this one. Looking at the code and the codec, it looks like model=ideapad *should* have worked for the mic stuff (as suggested in #33). Could you please verify:
 - Install Maverick
 - Install https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
 - reboot
 - verify that the neither internal nor external mic is working
 - paste an alsa-info into the bug, with the external mic plugged in? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo

Thanks!

Further research gives an explanation to my comment #42 is that in Karmic had no special support for this codec, which meant that a generic driver was used instead. This generic "fallback" driver is seldom used, but in this case it seemed to have worked ok...

-the microphone is working, except for the analog microphone when using a headset (the Vostro 320 has a built in camera, that's the microphone that works)
-headsets work, and when plugged in they cut the sound to the main speakers so the jack is working fine.

Lucid, Maverick, Natty: (Alsamixer shows: Conexant CX20582 (Pebble))
-the microphone is not working
-the headsets are not working. The sound always comes out through the speakers

Cleaning up old bugs - is this still nominated for Lucid? If so, would it be possible to use linux-backports-modules for this purpose? I suspect that it is fixed in ALSA 1.0.24, so if linux-backports-modules included alsa drivers from 1.0.24 (which it yet does not do) that might be the easiest way forward?
